Lanval

Ein Bild, an dem ich sehr lange gesessen bin, weil ich immer wieder Pause dazwischen gemacht habe. Es gehört zu meiner Reihe an klassischen Geschichten, die ich illustriere. Diese ist von Marie de France - Lanval, ein wunderschöner Lais (wie alle von Marie de France).

'Comrade,' they said, 'here comes one,
Who is neither swart nor dun.
Of all women by land and sea,
She is the fairest that may be.'
Lanval heard and raised his eye;
He knew her well and gave a sigh.
The blood shot up into his cheeks,
And somewhat hastily he speaks:
'In faith,' he said, 'that's my amie!
Now I don't care if they kill me
If but her mercy is assured,
For when I see her, I am cured.'
